“Days later, a national writers conference was held in Santiago. There were activities at various venues, including the Teatro Guiñol Santiago (Santiago Puppet Theatre) (...) León and I were there one morning, sitting in the last row, when Jorge Luis Hernández and José Manuel Fernández Pequeño read out UNEAC’s official statement on the incident, which had come about because Teresa had complained to Abel Prieto, its then president, and he had launched an investigation. Mustering his courage, León said publicly that the statement’s account of the incident was inaccurate and incomplete. They immediately made him get up onto the stage, and under the spotlight, like a folk singer without a guitar, he gave the details (...) The outrage was immediate and widespread. That night at UNEAC’s provincial headquarters we signed a declaration drafted by the conference organisers in an unprecedented act of courage and dignity – few in Cuba dared to lay themselves on the line in that way. The statement condemned the attack and demanded a thorough investigation with its findings to be acted upon”.
